How much is pet insurance?

There is no single price for pet insurance. Every quote is built from your pet's species, breed, age and ZIP code, and then from the three choices you make yourself: the deductible, the reimbursement rate and the annual limit. Below are the starting prices the carriers we compare publish, followed by the factors that move your own quote up or down.

Pet insurance cost by carrier

Starting prices are the lowest published rates for each carrier — the actual monthly cost for your pet depends on the factors below. Figures come from the carriers themselves and are updated as they change.

What makes pet insurance cost more or less

Species and breed

Dogs generally cost more to insure than cats, and breeds with known hereditary conditions carry higher premiums than mixed breeds of the same size.

Age at enrollment

Premiums rise with age, and most carriers raise them again at renewal. Enrolling while your pet is young locks in a lower starting rate.

Where you live

Quotes are priced on local veterinary costs, so the same policy for the same dog costs more in a major metro than in a rural ZIP code.

Deductible you pick

A higher annual deductible lowers your monthly premium and raises what you pay before reimbursement starts.

Reimbursement rate

Choosing 90% back instead of 70% raises the monthly cost. It also lowers your share of a large emergency bill.

Annual limit

Unlimited annual coverage costs more than a capped limit. Caps are cheaper each month but can be reached in a single surgery.
