Nationwide Review: The Only Major Insurer That Covers Birds and Exotics

4.0 / 5Best for: Owners of birds, reptiles and other exotic pets

Nationwide was the first pet insurer in the United States and remains the only large carrier that will write a policy for birds, reptiles, rabbits and other exotic species alongside dogs and cats.

What we like
  • Covers birds, reptiles, rabbits and other exotics
  • Wellness plan options for routine care
  • Multi-pet discounts available
  • Long operating history and large support organization
  • Bundles with other Nationwide policies
What to watch
  • Some plans reimburse from a benefit schedule, not a flat percentage
  • Plan tiers are harder to compare directly
  • Higher starting premiums for dogs
  • Wellness coverage is a separate purchase

What the plan covers

Accidents, illnesses, hereditary conditions, surgery and diagnostics across dogs, cats, birds and exotics. Depending on the tier you choose, reimbursement is either a flat percentage of the bill or based on a published benefit schedule for each condition.

Understanding benefit schedules

A benefit schedule pays up to a fixed dollar amount per condition rather than a percentage of whatever your vet charges. In a low-cost area that can be generous; in an expensive metro it can leave a gap. Ask which structure your quote uses before you buy.

Pricing and value

Dog quotes commonly start near $35 per month. The value is clearest for exotic pets, where there is essentially no competing product, and for households insuring several animals at once.

Who should skip it

If you have one dog or cat and want the simplest possible math, a flat 80–90% reimbursement carrier will be easier to reason about.

Our verdict

For an exotic pet, Nationwide is effectively the only option and a good one. For a standard dog or cat, the plans are solid but the benefit schedules and tiered structure are harder to compare than the flat-percentage carriers.
