Casket prices compared, freight included
Caskets are the single largest line item in most funeral bills and the one with the widest markup. A 20-gauge steel casket that a direct shipper delivers for around $1,000 is routinely quoted at $2,500–$3,500 in a showroom.
Freight is what decides the real winner: two retailers can list within $30 of each other and differ by $200 delivered. Confirm the delivery window against the service date before ordering.
Landed cost — item plus shipping — across 55 vendors and 274,000+ products.

Questions buyers ask
Can the funeral home refuse a casket I bought online?
No. Under the FTC Funeral Rule they must accept it and cannot add a handling charge. Give them the tracking number as soon as you order.
Does a sealed casket preserve remains?
There is no evidence a gasketed 'protective' casket meaningfully preserves remains. It is a comfort feature, not a preservation one — price it accordingly.
What about a rental casket?
For a viewing followed by cremation, a rental shell with an insert is usually $800–$1,300 and cheaper than buying. Ask for it by name; it is rarely offered.
