Orthopedic dog beds: what you are paying for
"Orthopedic" is not a regulated term. What matters is a solid slab of foam at least 3 inches thick — shredded foam or fiber fill compresses within months and offers a senior or large dog nothing. Check the description for "solid" or "single-piece" foam.
The second cost driver is the cover: a removable, machine-washable, water-resistant cover roughly doubles the useful life of the bed. Prices below are delivered, which matters because large beds ship in oversized boxes.
Landed cost — item plus shipping — across 48 retailers and 274,000+ products.

Questions buyers ask
Is memory foam better than egg-crate?
For senior or arthritic dogs, yes — memory foam distributes weight instead of bottoming out. Egg-crate convoluted foam is fine for light young dogs.
How often should the bed be replaced?
Press the foam: if it does not spring back within a couple of seconds, it is no longer supportive. Good beds last 3–5 years, cheap fill beds under one.
Are chew-proof beds worth the premium?
Only for genuine destroyers. A ripstop cover on standard foam is the middle ground and far cheaper than a fully reinforced bed.
