Transfer benches for the shower: prices and fit

A transfer bench straddles the tub wall so someone can sit down outside the tub and slide in, which removes the single most dangerous movement in the bathroom — stepping over a wall while wet. Fit is everything: measure the outside tub width and the clear floor space before comparing anything.

Prices cluster tightly around a few features: a padded seat, a sliding seat, and a swivel. Sliding models cost roughly $40–$90 more than fixed benches and are worth it when the person cannot pivot their hips unaided; a plain bench is otherwise fine.

Check these before you compare price

  • Weight capacity with a real margin (standard 300 lb, bariatric 400–500 lb)
  • Overall width vs the tub wall and the floor space outside it
  • Height-adjustable legs with suction or rubber tips on both sides
  • Reversible backrest, so it works in either bathroom layout

Questions buyers ask

Does Medicare pay for a transfer bench?

Original Medicare generally does not — bathroom safety equipment is usually excluded as not medically necessary. Some Medicare Advantage plans and HSA/FSA funds do cover it, so check your plan before paying out of pocket.

Transfer bench or shower chair?

If there is a tub wall to cross, use a transfer bench. In a curbless or low-threshold shower, a shower chair with a back is cheaper and takes less room.

Will the shower curtain still work?

Use a second curtain inside the bench or a curtain splash guard. Tucking one curtain behind the seat and one outside keeps water in without pinning the person.
