Rabbit insurance and small-mammal coverage

Rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets get sick quickly and are usually treated as exotic patients, which means higher exam fees and fewer clinics to choose from. Coverage exists, but it comes from a smaller set of providers than dog and cat plans.

What owners most need covered
  • GI stasis, the emergency rabbit owners face most often and one that escalates within hours
  • Overgrown or malocclused teeth, which need repeated dental work under anesthesia
  • Respiratory infections in guinea pigs and adrenal disease in ferrets
  • Exotic-vet emergency visits, which frequently mean an out-of-area drive
Common exclusions and limits
  • Dental disease is sometimes limited or excluded once a vet has already documented it
  • Spay and neuter is elective and normally not covered on accident-and-illness plans
  • Species lists vary — a plan covering rabbits may not cover ferrets

Questions to ask before you buy

  1. Is dental treatment included, or capped separately?
  2. Which small mammals does the species list actually name?
  3. How long is the illness waiting period, given how fast GI stasis moves?

Carriers we compare

Species eligibility differs by carrier and by state, so confirm on the carrier's own quote page that rabbits and small mammals are covered before you enroll. Starting prices below are the lowest published rates each carrier lists.
