Reptile insurance for bearded dragons, snakes and lizards

Reptile medicine is a specialty, and most reptile illnesses trace back to husbandry — temperature, humidity, lighting and diet. That matters for coverage, because carriers commonly exclude conditions they judge to be husbandry-related.

What owners most need covered
  • Herp-experienced exams and diagnostics, including imaging for impaction and egg retention
  • Metabolic bone disease and mouth rot, both slow and expensive to treat
  • Respiratory infections, the most frequent urgent reptile presentation
  • Surgery for prolapse, abscess or retained eggs
Common exclusions and limits
  • Conditions attributed to incorrect husbandry are widely excluded
  • Very few mainstream carriers write reptile policies at all
  • Discount plans may reduce exam cost but reimburse nothing on treatment

Questions to ask before you buy

  1. Does the plan exclude husbandry-related illness, and how is that judged?
  2. Are reptiles named in the policy, or handled case by case?
  3. Does my nearest reptile vet accept the plan?
